ROCK'S BLOG: My Thoughts on "Bohemian Rhapsody"

I saw the Queen biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody."  Some critics ripped it:

Freddie Mercury deserves better.
It asks the question of whether or not watching this movie is any better or worse than watching a good tribute band.
It's haphazard, and it somehow just barely works.

I thought it was a great, highly entertaining flick.  Even if you're not a fan of Queen, GO SEE THIS MOVIE.  You might become a fan when you leave the theatre.

Some of my random thoughts on the flick...

*Any movie that ends with people in the theatre clapping must be doing something right.

*Loved the Queen riff on the classic 20th Century Fox fanfare.

*Rami Malek did an amazing job as Freddie Mercury.  Not only did he provide some of the vocals but his mannerisms, dance moves & stage presence were spot on.

*Sasha Baron Cohen was the original choice to play Freddie.  I really don’t know how I could’ve watched his performance without laughing. Glad they made the switch.

*If you’re a hardcore Queen fan, you’ll see that the makers of the film took liberties with the story.  A lot of the dramatic scenes were added, some scenes are out of sequence and some of the history of Queen was made up.  Not really sure why they had to do this.  It’s a pretty amazing story on its own.

*The Live Aid concert scenes were some of the most amazing live concert footage I’ve ever seen in a movie.  You really get to experience what it was like to be at Wembley Stadium in 1985 among the crowd of 70,000.

*That concert scene, though cut for the movie, was shot in its entirety by the cast.  The full un-edited scene might be released, possibly as a video or DVD extra.

*I was asked by a Mom if the movie was ok for her 12 yr old daughter.  I said yes. The f-bombs are minimal as is the sexual content.

Here's the full "Live Aid" set from 1985.  It's possibly the best live performance EVER!
