Lissa Blog: Thoughts on The Conners Premiere

October 17, 2018

Roseanne was one of my favorite shows as a kid. And while I was giddy for the reboot and bummed at its cancellation, I respect Roseanne for signing away the rights and giving the rest of the cast/crew the opportunity to keep working. As I watched The Conners last night I was struck by how sincere their sorrow felt. Because they really WERE mourning the loss of their friend. Yet they did a good job of interjecting actual laughs between dark moments. The opioid scenario was heartbreaking and hits home for so many people, but I thought they addressed it very thoughtfully. Confession: I bawled when Aunt Jackie & Darlene hugged with the corn holders in the kitchen. Jackie's distress and confusion about how to process her sister's death felt very authentic. Also shed a few tears at the end when Dan messed up Rosie's side of the bed and hugged the pillow. Bottom line: I laughed, I cried, I have faith that Sara Gilbert/John Goodman/Laurie Metcalf can make this a successful series if the writing stays as tight as it was last night!

What did YOU think?
